We became friends with the director of the Busker’s Festival over the last 6 months. He is a really wonderful man and he loves making music. Nathan started playing with him and before long, they were singing in Italian together.
Stefano invited Nathan to record a song with him. One day we had an adventure where we went to an Italian recording studio. It was a really cool experience.
They had been practicing together for the special performance at the Busker’s Festival. They are slightly different musicians though. Stefano is the soul of a true poet (not a professional musician) and he cannot be bound by strict 4/4 time- making it very difficult for Nathan to play along side him as the songs change ever so slightly with each performance. But they do always have fun together.
It was an unfortunately rainy evening for the special concert night during the Busker’s Festival. Nathan and Justin started by playing a bit together at the outside venue. It was fun because our American friends all came out to hear them again. I was so excited because Alberta, the maid from work, also showed up. I told her where he would be and I got to meet her husband and her son. Nathan gave her a big hug and told her how happy he was to meet her- he told her she is famous! Her husband thought it was great that she was famous.
We also ran into the Mormon missionaries in town. We see them sometimes and we like to speak English to them- they do not run into a lot of Americans around. There was a new one in town and he loves music. I told them to hang out and watch the concert, but they have to be in by 9:30 and the show was not even scheduled to start until 10:30. The good news is that they saw the earlier concert the night before.
When the rain started, we had to move inside in a hurry. Luckily, they had a place right there ready to use in case of rain. Once we set up the show started.
Stefano is always pursuing drama in his performances. He started playing with just Nathan and throughout the evening he added more and more performers. During one song he had a saxophone player start in the back corner and wander through the crowd. It was such a nice surprise. The crowd was very energized.
A Brazilian musician who played a double neck mandolin joined in and a professional washboard player who recently got onstage with Bruce Springsteen was part of the group. The finale was Stefano’s favorite autobiographical song accompanied by a Scandinavian string quartet. It was an excellent concert.
It was also professionally videotaped and photographed. I need to get my hands on those items. It was such a great evening. It was a great way to end Nathan’s performances at the Busker’s Festival.
UPDATE- I got a few picture from Stefano, I know there are still better ones out there but I got these just in time to add to this blog.
The next evening we got to wander the festival and enjoy it. The weather was not excellent but we really did enjoy seeing the bands. It would have been nice to have more time to explore the festival but we were on our way to our next adventure.
